Things to do in Yaoundé in 48 hours
Mount Febe, the National Museum, the markets and good food: our itinerary.
Yaoundé, the “city of seven hills”, is easy to discover in two days with a little planning. Here is the itinerary our front desk recommends to guests, whether they are here on business or for the weekend.
Day 1: hills, history and views
In the morning, head up Mount Febe. The view over the city is the best introduction to Yaoundé. The site is home to a Benedictine monastery and its museum of Cameroonian art, rich in masks and sculptures.
Late morning, the National Museum. Housed in the former presidential palace in the city centre, it tells the story of Cameroon from pre-colonial times to independence.
Cameroonian lunch. Come back to the hotel for ndolé or poulet DG, or ask the front desk for a good spot near your visit.
In the afternoon, the Reunification Monument and a stroll around the municipal lake, before a drink at the hotel bar.
Day 2: markets, faith and flavours
Mokolo market, the city’s largest, for the atmosphere, fabrics and spices. Go early, leave valuables at the hotel and bargain with a smile.
Mary Queen of the Apostles Basilica in Mvolyé, on a hill south of the centre, for its architecture and calm.
In the evening, the Bastos district and its restaurants, or grilled fish at a local spot recommended by our team.
Practical tips
- Take a taxi or book our driver for the day: the front desk will tell you the usual fares.
- Carry some cash in FCFA and a phone with Mobile Money.
- The dry season (December to February) is ideal for walking around; in the rainy season, keep an umbrella handy.
